Current Reading Material

It wasn’t really planned but it appears that everything that I am reading at the moment is related to pregnancy. I have about 3 or 4 books on the go, and whichever one I pick up depends on my mood or (with the reference books) it’s because I need to know something in particular.

Like most preggo chicks, I own Up The Duff by Kaz Cooke and the biblical What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which I use for reference.

If it’s not a pregnancy book, then it’s a preggo magazine. I skip the birthing horror stories though.

Last November, my mother bought me a second-hand book called Birth Without Violence. I finally started reading it the other day and was quite shocked by it. It’s basically about the idea of birthing babies more peacefully; the crying and screaming is perceived as normal behaviour but is not necessarily so. The bubbies come out crying and screaming because their peaceful state has been disturbed, and not becuase they are supposed to behave that way. Anyway, I found it all extremely interesting. Even more shocking to me was how widely known this book is… yeah, a quick Google told me so. I had thought it was some cheesy discovery from the ’70s that everyone had forgotten about as soon as the next decade kicked in.

And I’m thinking that I want to take on some of the book’s advice (dimmed lighting, quieter voices etc) for the birthing process, but I don’t want to be seen as some kind of Mummy Diva… Can you imagine me screaming to my doctor: “don’t sever that unbilical cord! Not until it’s been breathing for at least 5 minutes!!!”. Hmmh, I think I will ask my obstetrician about these kinds of requests at my next appointment.

Back to the reading material. If I am not reading about pregnancy, then you’ll probably catch me looking at my recipe books or at junk mail catalogues. I’ve been wanting to bake new dishes (which I have been doing–I can now add frittata to my list of cooking accomplishments-yay!) and I’ve also been on the lookout for general home improvement stuff, or how to better organise my home.

I attribute the cooking and the furniture-buying to what is commonly known as the “nesting” phase. Anyway, the nesting has brought about some funny changes in the way I pass my time these days (since becoming pregnant) and I’ll probably talk more about that later…
