Some More Food Talk
I made a second cake last week, using a recipe from the Low To No Additives book.

It was a yoghurt, lemon and lime number and it was pretty tasty. (I know that I said I was off dairy, but I now have it in moderation; my son’s food sensitivities have calmed down it seems–although I still don’t drink cow’s milk.)
I also tried a new dinner recipe from Donna Hay: lamb on a white bean puree. That came out nice too. I used lamb cutlets instead of backstraps though, and the beans I used were cannellini.
And yesterday I made bean soup. I was lucky enough to get a big bag of organic broadbeans from my uncle. I boiled them for a while and then pureed them. I cut up some carrots and threw them into a separate pot, then I added the pureed beans, as well as some chicken stock. I also threw in some chopped baked potatoes that were left over from the night before. After a taste, I figured it needed onion. I fried some onion separately in olive oil and then added it to the soup which really set it off. There’s my bean soup on the fly.
So, I’m enjoying making new things. I rarely venture outside of my comfort zone so it’s big of me to do this.
Speaking of organic, I thought about giving my son a taste of food (other than breastmilk) for the first time this week. So, I got my act together and ordered some organic fruit and vegetables from a local place in Adelaide. Everything was fresh, aromatic and looked real (for once!). So easy, so right, soooo didn’t have to leave the house. Suddenly it didn’t matter that we could never get to Central Markets on the weekend. Getting them delivered like this is perfect. Of course one day, I’ll grow my own stuff but even then I won’t be able to grow everything!
(As it turns out though, I am holding off for a little longer before I give my son anything other than breastmilk–he’s doing fine on milk alone–but at least I gave myself a nudge to have real fruit and veg for my husband and I.)
And now for my big news. Earlier in the week, I made a passing comment to my dad about wanting to have a herb garden eventually. My dad was feeling pretty active that day (!) and before I had time to register what was going on, he was digging away in our garden. Then he went for a drive and came back with 2 tomato plants, 2 basil plants and a chilli plant. Yay! I guess I needed him to give me the head start, otherwise, who knows when I would have got it underway (considering that I recently blogged that I didn’t have the time to do it.) So, I have one row for the time being in my little humble herb garden, and when I am ready I will expand it. Here’s a pic:
