Martha, Donna, I’m Home!

Yesterday…wait for it… I made a cake!

So what, huh? It’s a big deal for me because I cannot remember the last time I made one… it must’ve been when I was a teenager, and even then I would have been helping my mum or it was probably one of those ghastly packet mix cakes.

I’ve had enough of buying dodgy cakes from the supermarket and feeling sickly just by looking at the ingredient list, and so I finally decided it was time to make my own! That way, I know exactly what’s in it and I can cut down on or eliminate additives.

I chose a recipe for a Coconut Cake With Lemon Syrup from Donna Hay’s Modern Classics (book 2) and for a first effort, it actually turned out great! Sure, I dented the top a little when I tried to transfer the cake from the tin (serves me right for trying to do it while it was still hot–hehe) and the overall mess I made was shameful (watching butter shoot across all the walls was interesting!), but it was fun and I hope to keep it up.

And most importantly, my cake was moist. That was my one goal: let it be moist!

Below is a pic of my clumsy cake. By the way, that’s awkwardly-poured lemon syrup on the top–I didn’t pee on it! Hehehehe.

More mediocre tales of Jen’s bakery are sure to come. Ahem.

    Brave effort, love your work.

I just made Mulberry jam for the first time last night. I’m getting better at these Jams.

Rachel got us a food drying system for my birthday. haven’t used it yet. Should be interesting though

Mulberry jam… YUMMO – good work! Don’t tell me they are YOUR mulberries though?!

Wow… food-drying system. Impressive. What do you think you will try first? Can you do banana chips with them?
